Planting Instructions::
Zinnias are the perfect flower for beginning and seasoned gardeners alike. They are hardy, prolific and provide great colour for borders. Zinnias are annuals. That means you plant the seeds each year! The beauty of zinnias is that you can also harvest the seeds next year from what you have grown, and do it all over again.
When To Plant:: Direct sow your zinnias outside as soon as all danger of frost has passed. Check for your Zone to see when the last frost date is! Zinnias like warm soil, so if you wait a bit, you will be rewarded with good germination.
Where To Plant:: Zinnias like heat, sun and well-drained soil so choose a spot that has 6-8 hours of sunlight for best results. Zinnias will bloom in most soil types they prefer well-drained, neutral, or slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.
How to Plant:: Plant 2x the depth of the seed (about 1/8-1/4" deep) and lightly cover with soil. Gently water in. Sow each seed no closer than 6" for healthy plants. If you sow closer together, you run the risk of not having enough air circulation around the plants and developing powdery mildew.
Watering:: Water at ground level and avoid too much water on the leaves, also to avoid powdery mildew. It's great if you can keep the soil below the plant moist for 6-8" to allow for a healthy root growth. On the farm, we have a drip irrigation system that allows us to keep the plants moist as required.
Fertilizing:: Most zinnias don't require fertilizing if your soil is rich and properly amended. We fertilize our zinnias once with a natural marine phytoplankton based solution such as Marphyl. (available in Canada on Amazon.ca) Usually, we fertilize when there are 6-8 sets of true leaves on the plant.
Pinching :: Zinnias will perform best if you pinch them when they have 4 true sets of leaves. This will produce a bushier plant with more blooms!
Deadheading :: Zinnias are 'cut and come again' flowers, which means that the more you cut the flowers (or deadhead), the more flowers they will produce.
Sorry, our seeds are only available in Canada at this time.
