Planting Instructions::

Cosmos are the perfect flower for beginning and seasoned gardeners alike. They are hardy, prolific and provide great colour for tall borders. Cosmos are annuals. That means you plant the seeds each year! The beauty of them is that you can also harvest the seeds next year from what you have grown, and do it all over again....for free!

When To Plant:: We recommend that you sow your cosmos outside as soon as all danger of frost has passed. Check for your Zone to see when the last frost date is and give yourself a bit more time than that date - you just never know, and being sure is a lot better than having to replant! Feel free to plant every couple of weeks to stagger your harvest and bloom period. Cosmos prefer to be started outside so if you wait for your last frost to pass, you will be rewarded with good germination.

Where To Plant:: Cosmos like full sun and well-drained soil so choose a spot that has 6-8 hours of sunlight for best results. Cosmos will bloom in most soil types they prefer well-drained, neutral, or slightly acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. We have found our cosmos grow 48" tall and more, so be sure to provide lots of space for them, or plant them in the back of a border and plan to have to support and stake them. Their foliage is beautiful and fairy-like.

How to Plant:: Cover the seeds lightly with soil. Gently water in and keep moist until germination occurs. Sow each seed approximately 6" apart.  Thin to 12-18" apart once germinated.

Watering:: Water thoroughly after you seed. Water at ground level and avoid too much water on the leaves, also to avoid powdery mildew. It's great if you can keep the soil below the plant moist for 6-8" to allow for a healthy root growth. On the farm, we have a drip irrigation system that allows us to keep the plants moist as required.

Fertilizing:: Most cosmos don't require fertilizing if your soil is rich and properly amended. We fertilize our cosmos once with a natural marine phytoplankton based solution such as Marphyl. (available in Canada on Amazon.ca) Usually, we fertilize when there are 6-8 sets of true leaves on the plant and just as the buds appear.

Pinching :: Cosmos will perform best if you pinch them when they have 4 true sets of leaves. This will produce a bushier plant with more blooms!

Deadheading :: Cosmos are 'cut and come again' flowers, which means that the more you cut the flowers (or deadhead), the more flowers they will produce! Cosmos will last right through to the last frost. They make wonderful cut flowers, so bring them indoors and enjoy them in your home.

Sorry, our seeds are only available in Canada at this time.
